Intercom Fin alternatives

Five AI customer service agent options compared on nine criteria

Test it on the messy stuff.

Every vendor demo runs on a clean help center. Yours has gaps, old PDFs and answers that live in nobody's article. Bring 10 real customer questions and your messiest help docs, and score us against Fin.

Bring your messy stuff

The right Intercom Fin alternative depends on which helpdesk you run and where your answers live. Zendesk AI agents fit teams already on Zendesk. Chatbase fits small teams that want a self-serve bot today. Ada fits enterprises automating support across voice, chat and email. Tidio fits small businesses that want live chat and an AI agent in one inbox. Tricky Wombat fits teams with complex questions whose answers are spread across many sources, and it runs alongside any of them.

Fin is the AI agent at the center of the company formerly called Intercom, which renamed itself Fin on May 12, 2026 and kept "Intercom" as the name of its helpdesk (CX Today (opens in a new tab)). Fin states that more than 12,000 customers use it, with an average resolution rate of 76%. It learns from your help center, public URLs, PDFs, snippets and past conversations, and it runs on Intercom, Zendesk, Salesforce, HubSpot and Freshworks (Fin FAQ (opens in a new tab)).

That model fits a support team with a well-kept help center. It fits less well if you want an AI agent built into a different helpdesk, a bot you can buy without a sales call, or answers to questions your help center never covered.

The five alternatives below each fit a different situation. The table compares them with Fin on nine criteria. Each profile after it explains the situation where that product wins, including the situations where Tricky Wombat is the wrong pick.

Test it on the messy stuff

Every vendor demo runs on content the vendor chose. Yours has articles written three product versions ago and PDF manuals nobody indexed. Accuracy on that content is the only number that predicts whether customers trust the bot after month two.

Fin offers a 14-day free trial, self-serve on Intercom and through sales on Zendesk, Salesforce, HubSpot and Freshworks (Fin FAQ (opens in a new tab)). A Tricky Wombat pilot runs on your live data, with no fee and no contract for 14 days.

Run the same test on your two finalists:

  1. Collect 10 questions your customers asked in the last month. Include at least 3 that need facts from more than one source.
  2. Connect the same content to both tools.
  3. Score every answer as correct and cited, correct but uncited, wrong, or no answer.
  4. Count confident wrong answers on their own line. A confident wrong answer costs more than no answer, because the customer acts on it.

Tricky Wombat publishes the seven points where retrieval pipelines fail (opens in a new tab). Use the list as a scoring checklist for any vendor, including this one.

Why do companies look for a Fin alternative?

Most teams that look past Fin agree on the goal: an AI agent that answers customers correctly and hands the rest to a person. The question is fit.

The first reason is the helpdesk. On Zendesk and Salesforce, you buy Fin through sales with minimum commitments, according to Fin. Zendesk includes its own AI agents in all Suite and Support plans.

The second is size. A five-person shop that wants a bot on its website by Friday tends to look for a free plan and a self-serve signup, which points toward Chatbase or Tidio.

The third is scale. Contact centers on Genesys or NICE CXone, with heavy voice and SMS volume, need an agent that plugs into that stack, which is where Ada competes.

The fourth is content. If the answers your customers need sit in old manuals, spec sheets and past proposals, the job looks more like search across many sources.

Is Tricky Wombat right for you?

Tricky Wombat is built for firms where one customer question draws on several documents. A distributor's customer asks whether a pump model runs on a 50 Hz three-phase supply at 2,000 meters. The answer sits in a 2019 installation manual, a current spec sheet and a proposal Sales sent to a similar customer last year. No help center article covers it. Putting the right passages from all three in front of the model is where answers go wrong.

Every Tricky Wombat plan includes a customer-facing chatbot alongside internal search. The chatbot runs each question through five stages before the model generates a word. The first stage classifies the question, and that classification picks the retrieval strategy. Answers cite their sources. When your content does not cover a question, the bot says so and can route the question to you as a content suggestion. The design follows one thesis: answer quality depends far more on the context a model receives than on which model you choose.

See how the pipeline works → (opens in a new tab)

Tricky Wombat reads more than 1,000 file types, including scanned PDFs through OCR. A project is up and answering as soon as your documents are uploaded, and the engineers who built the pipeline run onboarding themselves.

Tricky Wombat is the wrong pick in three cases. If you need an AI agent inside your helpdesk that hands conversations to live agents and issues refunds, Fin, Zendesk AI agents and Ada are built for that job. Tricky Wombat has no helpdesk integrations and no live-agent handoff today. If you want your blog or newsletter to sync into the bot automatically, continuous Substack, Medium and WordPress sync through Zapier is on the roadmap, not shipped. And the company runs a deliberately small, invite-only onboarding queue, so you may wait for a slot.

Choose it over Fin if your customers' hardest questions draw on manuals, PDFs and proposals that no help center covers, and you want a 14-day pilot on your own documents before you commit.

Which other Fin alternative fits your team?

Each of these four wins a different situation. Pick the card that sounds like your team.

Zendesk AI agents: best for teams already on Zendesk

Zendesk AI agents win on proximity. They are included in every Zendesk Suite and Support plan and run on messaging, email and voice inside the workspace your agents already use. They learn from your help center plus sources such as Google Drive and PDFs. Zendesk states that its AI agents resolve up to 80% of customer interactions.

Zendesk moved its older Essential AI agents to legacy status in May 2026 and ends access on December 10, 2026, so confirm which version your trial runs.

Choose it over Fin if Zendesk is your helpdesk and you want the AI agent, the tickets and the reporting from one vendor.

Chatbase: best for small teams that want a self-serve bot

Chatbase lets you train a bot on your URLs and documents without a sales call. It states it is "ready in minutes" and used by more than 10,000 businesses. A free plan with 50 message credits a month lets you test before you pay. Paid plans add up to 20 AI actions per agent, channels such as WhatsApp, Slack and Instagram, and a choice of models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and others.

Training content is capped by plan, from 1 MB on Free to 40 MB on Pro. Measure your document set before you pick a tier.

Choose it over Fin if you want a self-serve website bot you can start on a free plan, whatever helpdesk you use. See our Chatbase alternatives (opens in a new tab) page.

Ada: best for enterprises automating support across many channels

Ada is built for large contact centers. One AI agent runs across voice, email, chat, WhatsApp, SMS and in-app, and it hands off to 12 platforms, including Zendesk, Salesforce, Genesys and NICE CXone. Playbooks turn written SOPs into multi-step automations. Ada launched its Unified Reasoning Engine in February 2026 and states an 84% automated resolution rate across more than 350 businesses.

Vendr reports annual agreements as Ada's baseline, with 2 to 3 year terms common, so plan procurement time into your evaluation.

Choose it over Fin if your contact center runs on Genesys, Amazon Connect or NICE CXone and voice is a large share of your volume.

Tidio: best for small businesses that want live chat plus an AI agent

Tidio puts live chat, email, Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp in one inbox, and its Lyro AI agent answers from your website, PDFs and Shopify catalog. Tidio states that more than 300,000 businesses use it and that Lyro resolves 67% of conversations on average. The free plan includes 10 seats, so your whole team can answer chats from day one.

Lyro is an add-on sold by conversation volume. Estimate your monthly chat count before you choose a plan.

Choose it over Fin if you run an online store and want your team and the AI agent working the same chats. See our Tidio alternatives (opens in a new tab) page.

Can you run Tricky Wombat alongside Fin?

Yes. Tricky Wombat does not ask you to replace Fin or your helpdesk. You deploy it one project at a time and connect only the sources that project uses. Fin keeps resolving support conversations from your help center.

The split works because the two jobs differ. Fin answers the questions your help center was written for: how to reset a password, where an order is, how to change a plan. Some customers ask questions no article covers. A reseller wants to know which firmware shipped with a 2021 unit and what warranty terms you quoted a similar buyer. Those answers sit in past proposals, PDF manuals and spec sheets that were never turned into articles.

In practice, a team points Tricky Wombat at one of those document sets, such as the product manual library or the last three years of proposals. It answers questions as soon as the documents are uploaded, with citations to each source. Fin stays on your support channels, and nothing in your helpdesk changes.

How quickly can you go live?

Fin says it can be live with any helpdesk in less than an hour. Chatbase says minutes. Tidio says a few clicks. Zendesk says its AI agents automate requests from day one using your existing knowledge. Ada does not publish a timeline. Tricky Wombat answers questions as soon as your documents are uploaded.

Those numbers measure when the bot turns on. Answers customers trust take testing and content fixes. Before you sign, ask each vendor who does that work, how many hours of your team's time it takes, and which metric decides whether the pilot passed. Our chat implementation timeline (opens in a new tab) breaks down where the weeks go.

How should you choose an AI customer service agent?

Start with your helpdesk. On Zendesk, test Zendesk AI agents first. On Intercom, Fin is built in. With a contact center on Genesys or NICE CXone, add Ada to the list.

Next, sort your customer questions. Most are lookups any tool on this page handles. Some need facts from a manual, a spec sheet and a past proposal at once. Weight those most, because they are where tools differ.

Then match your size. A small store that wants a bot this week should try Chatbase or Tidio on a free plan. A firm whose answers live in documents nobody turned into articles should try Tricky Wombat.

Finally, run the same test on your top two with your own questions. Ask each vendor to show a conversation the bot cannot resolve, and check what your agent sees when it arrives: the full transcript, a summary or a blank ticket.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Intercom Fin alternative?

The best Fin alternative depends on your helpdesk and your content. Zendesk AI agents fit teams on Zendesk. Chatbase fits small teams that want a self-serve bot. Ada fits enterprises across voice, chat and email. Tidio fits small businesses that want live chat. Tricky Wombat fits teams with complex questions whose answers are spread across many sources.

Can you use Tricky Wombat and Fin at the same time?

Yes. Tricky Wombat deploys one project at a time and connects only the sources that project uses, so it runs next to Fin without changing your helpdesk. Fin keeps answering help center questions on your support channels. Tricky Wombat answers questions that draw on manuals, PDFs and past proposals, with citations to each source.

Is Fin the same as Intercom?

Fin is the AI agent, and since May 12, 2026 it is also the company name. Intercom renamed itself Fin and kept "Intercom" as the name of its helpdesk software. You can run Fin on the Intercom helpdesk or on Zendesk, Salesforce, HubSpot and Freshworks. Search results and contracts may use either name.

Does Fin work with Zendesk?

Yes. Fin can learn from a Zendesk help center and answer in Zendesk Messenger and Zendesk tickets. On Zendesk, you buy Fin through sales, and minimum commitments apply, according to Fin. Zendesk also includes its own AI agents in every Suite and Support plan, so compare both on your own tickets.

Is there a free alternative to Fin?

Chatbase and Tidio both have free plans. Chatbase's free plan includes 50 message credits a month and one AI agent. Tidio's free plan includes 10 seats and 50 conversations a month, and its Lyro AI agent is an add-on. Fin offers a 14-day free trial with no credit card.

Is Glean an Intercom Fin alternative?

No. Glean searches internal company knowledge for employees, while Fin answers customers on your support channels. If you need both an employee search tool and a customer-facing bot, check whether one product covers both jobs. Every Tricky Wombat plan includes a customer-facing chatbot alongside internal search.

When should you start evaluating a Fin alternative?

On Intercom, Fin is available month to month, so you can test an alternative at any time. On Zendesk, Salesforce, HubSpot or Freshworks, minimum commitments apply, so check your order form. Start at least 90 days before that term ends, which leaves room for a 14-day pilot and a security review.
