Bring your messy stuff

The right Coveo alternative depends on which job you bought Coveo for. Glean fits companies rolling out employee search to everyone at once. Elastic fits engineering teams that want to build their own search. Lucidworks fits enterprises that want commerce and knowledge search they can self-host. Algolia fits developers building site and product search. Sinequa fits regulated enterprises that need on-premises or air-gapped search. Tricky Wombat fits teams with complex questions whose answers are spread across many sources, and it runs alongside any of them.

Coveo is a public company (TSX: CVO) that sells one AI search platform for four jobs: commerce, service, website and workplace search. In fiscal 2026, which ended March 31, 2026, its SaaS subscription revenue grew 13% and its generative AI customer count nearly doubled (Coveo (opens in a new tab)). Commerce made up nearly 60% of new business bookings in the fourth quarter. Gartner named it a Leader in the 2026 Magic Quadrant for Search and Product Discovery.

That breadth puts two different buyers on the same shortlist. One runs product search for an online store. The other wants employees and customers to get answers from documents. The six alternatives below each fit a different situation. The table compares them with Coveo on eight criteria, and each profile explains where that product wins, including where Tricky Wombat is the wrong pick.

Test it on the messy stuff

Every vendor demo runs on data the vendor chose. Your data has duplicate files, stale drafts and three versions of the same rate card. Accuracy on that data predicts whether people keep using the tool after month two.

A Tricky Wombat pilot runs on your live data, with no fee and no contract for 14 days.

Run the same test on your two finalists:

  1. Collect 10 questions your staff or customers asked in the last month. Include at least 3 that need facts from more than one source.
  2. Connect the same sources to both tools with the same permissions.
  3. Score every answer as correct and cited, correct but uncited, wrong, or no answer.
  4. Count confident wrong answers on their own line. A confident wrong answer costs more than no answer, because someone acts on it.

Tricky Wombat publishes the seven points where retrieval pipelines fail (opens in a new tab). Use the list as a scoring checklist for any vendor, including this one.

Why do companies look for a Coveo alternative?

Coveo sells to two kinds of buyer, and they leave for different reasons.

The first buyer runs commerce or site search. Their questions are about catalogs, merchandising and conversion, and Coveo is built for this job. Teams here switch when they want a different operating model. Developers who want a free plan and pay-as-you-go billing look at Algolia. Teams that want the whole search stack on their own infrastructure look at Elastic or Lucidworks. Tricky Wombat is not a product-catalog search engine, so this buyer should skip it.

The second buyer wants answers from documents, for employees or customers, and the choice comes down to scope. If you want one tool rolled out to every employee across hundreds of apps, Glean is built for that. If your content must stay inside your own network, possibly air-gapped, Sinequa fits. If the hardest questions belong to one team or one client project, and each answer needs facts from several sources, Tricky Wombat fits.

Service teams sit between the two groups. Coveo sells a Service use case for support agents and self-service portals. If your support answers live in a help center, product manuals and engineering tickets, test each tool on a question that needs all three. Tricky Wombat includes a customer-facing chatbot on every plan, so one deployment answers staff and customers from the same sources.

A third reason cuts across both buyers: some engineering teams would rather build and own the retrieval layer. Elastic suits them, as our Elastic Workplace Search alternatives (opens in a new tab) page explains.

Is Tricky Wombat right for you?

Tricky Wombat is built for firms where the answer to one client question often sits in three places: a proposal in Sales, a method in Delivery and a contract clause in Legal. Finding the closest-matching document is the easy part. Assembling the right context from all three is where answers go wrong. Tricky Wombat runs every question through a seven-step pipeline, from query rewriting and GraphRAG to reranking and statistical chunking, before a model writes a word. The design follows one thesis: answer quality depends far more on the context a model receives than on which model you choose.

See how the seven-step pipeline works → (opens in a new tab)

Every Tricky Wombat plan includes a customer-facing chatbot alongside internal search, and answers cite their sources. When your content does not cover a question, the chatbot says so instead of guessing. It runs as a website chatbot, with no helpdesk integrations today. If you need answers inside Zendesk or Salesforce Service Cloud, keep that job in your helpdesk.

You deploy Tricky Wombat one project at a time, next to whatever search tool you already use. A project is up and answering questions as soon as your documents are uploaded. The engineers who built the pipeline run onboarding themselves, with no implementation partner in between.

Tricky Wombat is the wrong pick in three cases. If you need product search, merchandising and recommendations across an online catalog, Coveo, Algolia or Lucidworks is built for that job. If you want one platform that replaces every search tool across the company in a single rollout, look at Glean or Coveo Workplace. And the company runs a deliberately small, invite-only onboarding queue, so you may wait for a slot.

Choose it over Coveo if your hardest questions draw on many internal sources, you want to start with one project instead of a platform rollout, and you want a pilot on your own data before you sign an annual contract.

Which other Coveo alternative fits your team?

Each of these five wins a different situation. Pick the card that sounds like your company.

Glean wins when the goal is one search and assistant layer for every employee. It lists 275+ connectors, inherits source permissions and builds knowledge graphs across your apps. Its Model Hub gives access to 40+ LLMs, and a no-code agent builder lets teams automate work on top of search.

Buyers typically commit to 100 to 250 users or more on annual or multi-year terms, according to Vendr, and mid-sized companies reach first value in about four to five weeks, according to the Glean Community. Plan the rollout as a company project.

Choose it over Coveo if your need is internal knowledge for every employee. Our Glean alternatives (opens in a new tab) page compares it with other workplace tools.

Elasticsearch has carried an AGPL open-source license option since August 2024, and Elastic Cloud offers a 14-day trial with no credit card. Agent Builder became generally available in January 2026, with MCP and A2A support and any model you choose.

Elastic ended its packaged Enterprise Search products, including Workplace Search, with version 9.0. You now build the search experience on Elasticsearch directly, using 42 documented content connectors.

Choose it over Coveo if you have search engineers and want to own every layer of the stack.

Lucidworks: best for commerce and knowledge search you can self-host

Lucidworks covers the same two jobs as Coveo, commerce and knowledge search, with SaaS, self-hosted or hybrid-SaaS deployment. It ships packaged agents for Q&A and guided selling, plus an MCP server. Everest Group named Lucidworks a Leader in its 2026 Enterprise Search Products PEAK Matrix. Premium support promises a 20-minute initial response on severity 1 issues.

Lucidworks publishes no deployment timeline, and contract terms are set in each order form. Ask for both in writing during evaluation.

Choose it over Coveo if you want a similar platform but need to run it on your own infrastructure.

Algolia wins on self-serve speed for storefronts and websites. A free plan needs no credit card, and paid self-serve plans carry no long-term commitment. More than 18,000 businesses use Algolia, and Gartner named it a Leader in the 2026 Magic Quadrant for Search and Product Discovery for the third year running. Agent Studio grounds AI answers in your index, catalog and business rules, with your choice of LLM.

Algolia indexes the records you send it, and its docs list 11 ingestion connectors. Plan how internal documents will reach the index if you need them.

Choose it over Coveo if product and site search is the job and you want developers to start on a free plan.

Sinequa, part of ChapsVision since an acquisition announced in November 2024, is still sold as an enterprise AI search and agent platform. It runs on-premises, in a private cloud or air-gapped, and connects to over 200 data sources. Its customers include Pfizer, AstraZeneca, Airbus and TotalEnergies, and it powers ChapsVision's ChapsAgents platform, launched in April 2026.

Sinequa's published terms default to a 3-year initial term, and it publishes no deployment timeline. Confirm the roadmap and support model under ChapsVision before you sign.

Choose it over Coveo if sovereignty rules require your search index to run inside your own network.

Can you run Tricky Wombat alongside Coveo?

Yes. Tricky Wombat does not ask you to replace anything. You deploy it one project at a time and give access only to the people on it. Coveo keeps running your storefront, support portal or intranet search for everyone else.

The split works because the jobs differ. Coveo ranks products, articles and pages from one unified index. A client engagement asks harder questions. What did we recommend to a similar client in 2024, which contract terms did Legal reject, and how did Delivery scope the last three projects like this one? Those answers sit in drafts, PDFs and decks across several systems, and a project-scoped deployment tunes retrieval to that one engagement.

In practice, a firm starts with one practice group or one high-stakes engagement. Tricky Wombat is answering its questions as soon as that team's documents are uploaded. Existing access rights stay intact for every question, and every answer cites the material it came from. Nothing in your Coveo setup changes.

How should you choose an enterprise search vendor?

Start by naming the job. Shoppers looking for products need catalog search and merchandising, which Coveo, Algolia and Lucidworks are built for. Employees or customers looking for answers in documents need retrieval across files, permissions and citations, which Glean, Sinequa and Tricky Wombat are built for. Elastic serves either job if you build it.

Next, decide who owns relevance tuning: the vendor, with a packaged platform, or your engineers, with a self-hosted build. If customers will read the answers, also ask a question your content does not cover and confirm the tool says so instead of guessing.

Then weigh rollout scope. Some tools are sold company-wide on multi-year terms. Others start with one team. Pick the scope you can measure in 14 days, run the same test on two finalists, and sign the shortest contract that covers the result.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Coveo alternative?

The best Coveo alternative depends on the job. Glean fits company-wide employee search. Elastic fits teams that build their own. Lucidworks fits self-hosted commerce and knowledge search. Algolia fits site and product search. Sinequa fits on-premises search in regulated industries. Tricky Wombat fits teams with complex questions whose answers are spread across many sources.

Can you use Tricky Wombat and Coveo at the same time?

Yes. Tricky Wombat deploys one project at a time and connects only the sources that project uses, so it runs next to Coveo. Coveo keeps powering your storefront, support portal or intranet search, while Tricky Wombat answers one team's complex questions that draw on proposals, methods and contracts stored in different systems.

No. Tricky Wombat answers questions from documents for employees and customers. It does not rank product catalogs, run merchandising rules or personalize storefront results. For product search, compare Coveo with Algolia or Lucidworks. Coveo and Algolia were both named Leaders in the 2026 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Search and Product Discovery.

Is Algolia a Coveo alternative?

Algolia is a Coveo alternative for site and product search. It offers a free plan with no credit card, pay-as-you-go paid plans and an enterprise Elevate plan with NeuralSearch. More than 18,000 businesses use it, and Gartner named both Algolia and Coveo Leaders in its 2026 Magic Quadrant for Search and Product Discovery.

Is Elasticsearch a Coveo alternative?

Elasticsearch is an engine, not a packaged search product. Elastic retired its Workplace Search and App Search products with version 9.0, so you build the search experience yourself on Elasticsearch. It suits engineering teams that want to own relevance tuning, hosting and connectors, and it offers a 14-day Cloud trial.

Is Glean a Coveo alternative?

Glean replaces Coveo Workplace, not Coveo Commerce. It searches internal company knowledge for employees across 275+ connectors and adds an agent builder. Buyers typically commit to 100 users or more, according to Vendr. For storefront search, compare Algolia or Lucidworks instead.

When should you start evaluating a Coveo alternative?

Start at least 90 days before your Coveo renewal, and check your contract for its notice period. Coveo sells annual and three-year subscriptions. A 14-day pilot on your own data, plus two to four weeks of procurement and security review, fits inside that window and gives you a real comparison before you renew.
